Ahhhh, Spring. The weather is warmer, the sun stays out longer and our urge to adventure gets stronger.
Whether it’s camping out or staying in a backcountry hut – spring is a great time to get into nature. Walk, ride or even book a guided trip for a night (we recommend doing so under the stars with Wānaka Heli-Hikes or Adventure Consultants). There’s endless terrain to explore, so start writing your hut trip bucket list and knock them off one-by-one!
Did you know there’s 750 km of bike tracks to explore around Wānaka? These include classics like Sticky Forest and the Lizzy Woods jump park, as well as cruisey options like the lakefront, Eely Point Track or the Millennium Track. If you’re in for a slog, check out Grandview Mountain or Isthmus Peak. And if downhill is more your style, head out to Cardrona Bike Park, for some chairlift-fueled adrenaline. Finally we’d be loathe to forget Bike Glendhu, Wānaka’s newest bike park, loved by riders for its fresh trails and stunning vistas.
If you’re wondering how to spend a Spring day in Wānaka, look no further than our glorious lake. Take in the views by grabbing an ice cream or gelato and stroll the sandy lakefront. Go for a swim, hire a kayak or paddle board, take a high-octane ride in a jet boat, go for a leisurely lake cruise, explore our lake’s islands, try your luck fishing, the list just doesn’t end.
Whether it’s an odd rainy day, or you simply want to bask in the sun with a beverage, a tasting tour is great Spring day activity for the adults. Peruse wine tasting rooms at Maude, Rippon and Aitken’s Folly. Or grab a paddle at local breweries B. Social by B. Effect or Rhyme and Reason.
Pick up a gelato from Black Peak Gelato, or an ice cream from Patagonia. We love the smoothies from the Dripping Bowl and the filling burritos from Burrito Craft. Top it off with a Snickers-esque bar from Fedeli and you’re set.
Okay, okay we just had to include this! You simply can’t have a list about Wānaka in Spring without including cute baby animals. Check out all the new offspring at the Wānaka Lavender Farm or take a trip with Ridgeline Adventures. You can also meet the flightless Weka on Mou Wahu Island on a half-day tour with Eco Wanaka Adventures!
