Did you know that plastic water bottles are among the top five most common items found in beach clean-ups around the world?
1 million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute. That number is predicted to jump another 20% by 2021. And by 2050, plastic production will account for 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
So what can you do to help limit your plastic consumption? The answer is simple. Refillable water bottles.
Everyone has a water bottle. Whether it’s a Nalgene decorated in a plethora of stickers or a fancy temperature-regulating Hydro Flask. And if you don’t? Well, luckily there are plenty of places in Wānaka where you can purchase your very own bottle!
But what happens when it’s time to refill?
Tap water is free, refreshing and plastic-free. But sometimes, it can be hard to find. That’s where RefillNZ comes in. RefillNZ collaborates with cafes, bars and other businesses who are happy for passerbys to refill for free. It’s a behavioural change campaign – provide the infrastructure to facilitate the change.
Participating venues receive RefillNZ stickers for their business window. They’re also added to the RefillNZ map on the web and the RefillNZ app.
On December 17th, 2019, Cardrona Alpine Resort became the first major tourism operator in New Zealand to go single-use plastic bottle free! This decision effectively removes 50,000 plastic bottles from being sold on the mountains every year.
And don’t forget, many of our local cafes have stopped providing single use coffee cups and have opted for rentable Again Again cups. Join Lake Wanaka and our businesses as we reduce our impact on the planet.
