The government has developed a New Zealand-Aotearoa Government Tourism Strategy which has the goal of ensuring tourism growth is productive, sustainable and inclusive. This is to help grow New Zealand for all, improve the wellbeing of New Zealanders and to protect and restore our natural environment, ultimately enriching our country through sustainable tourism growth.

Prospective members

Lake Wānaka Tourism (LWT) believes that we live in the most special place in the world; we want to ensure that our people and our place thrives now, and for future generations.

LWT is the official regional tourism organisation for the Wānaka region. It is an incorporated society owned, funded and governed by the commercial businesses in the Wānaka region.

LWT’s key activity areas include destination management, destination marketing, industry capability, business support and management of the i-SITE Visitor Centre (via a subsidiary company).

As a member of Lake Wanaka Tourism, your business will receive a free business listing on this website, as well as contact details, photos, video, social media and website links. Your business will also have access to the Lake Wanaka Tourism brand and visual assets.

Members have the opportunity to be included in itineraries for visiting domestic and international media where appropriate and are also included in our database for fortnightly newsletters with specific information and opportunities relevant to local tourism community.

You will have the opportunity to attend industry updates and networking events, including member updates, AGMs, workshops and other industry functions, as well as access to tourism statistics, market intelligence and insights.

Annual Plan

Lake Wānaka Tourism is responsible for both destination marketing and destination management. Our role is to position Wānaka in both international and domestic markets and to work collaboratively with QLDC and Destination Queenstown to deliver the region’s destination management plan (DMP), Travel to a thriving future.

Key Activity includes:

Destination Marketing

•  Campaigns, partnerships, social media, and maintaining www.wanaka.co.nz as the official and leading source of visitor information, education and inspiration for the Wānaka region

• Communications: Manage member communications, news media relationships, and destination reputation.

• Media and PR: Distribute media releases, pitch stories, manage relationships.

Business Capability

• Connecting businesses with resources and tools to build resiliency.

• Sustainability: Support members to reach the region’s regenerative tourism goal.

Member Services: •Support businesses with LWT membership, enquiries & events.

Shared Services

Through a shared services model with Destination Queenstown there is increased capability for the following:

• Travel Trade: Manage relationships with wholesalers, sellers, attend trade events.

• Business Events: Generate leads, manage relationships with organisers, attend BE events.

• Data & Insights: Provide dashboards, reports, and data snapshots.

Destination Management

Improving local and visitor wellbeing and experience, forging connections between people and places, and enabling healthy ecosystems, so that the district becomes known as a leading example of how travel creates a thriving future.

* The purpose defined above was shaped by design forum workshops in the communities of Glenorchy, Arrowtown, Wānaka and Queenstown.
