Leaving Wānaka and heading past Glendhu Bay – a favourite Kiwi camping spot – the high mountains and glaciers of Mt Aspiring National Park come into view.
Continue past rocky outcrops, remnants of ancient glaciers and onto a graveled road, past farmland to follow the Matukituki River upstream into epic views of glaciers, mountain peaks, tussock grasslands to the end of the road at Raspberry Creek and the DOC car park, where tramping access into Mt. Aspiring National Park begins.
As you leave town, stop in at Rippon Winery for a tasting and unbelievable views over the lake and mountain ranges.
If you’re after more type-2 fun, hike up the famous Roy’s Peak or take your bike to Bike Glendhu, Wānaka’s pedal-powered bike park.
After that, relax on the shores of Glendhu Bay or head to Velo Cafe for beer and nachos.
For an easy walk head up to Diamond Lake, a beautiful mirror-like oasis that freezes over in the winter. For a bit more challenge, head all the way up to the top of Rocky Mountain.
If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, hitch an airborne lift with Wanaka Paragliding or scale a waterfall with Wildwire via ferrata.
In the winter, take your skis and get a few laps in at Treble Cone.
Raspberry Creek carpark is the end of the road for cars going in to Mt. Aspiring National Park, from here, all you’ll need to explore the park are two feet and a heartbeat.
There are tons of incredible tramps, like the half-day walk to Rob Roy Glacier and Aspiring Hut. Or go all out and try big hikes like Cascade Saddle, French Ridge or Liverpool huts.
