A difficult 3-day section of New Zealand's Te Araroa trail, the Motatapu Track is only for experienced hikers, but provides spectacular high country landscapes.

This route, part of the Te Araroa Trail, was created following an Overseas Investment Office condition of approval of Robert and Eileen Langes purchase of Motatapu and Mt Soho Station pastoral leases. The Langes invested generously in the tracks development and it was opened by Prime Minister, Helen Clarke, in 2008. The track is well marked and joins a network of 3 identical 12 bunk huts. It follows a demanding line and has little benching. It involves a series of long climbs and descents, and has a number of sidles across steep faces.

  • Time: 3 – 4 days
  • Distance: 49 km
  • Grade: Difficult. Due to the exposed nature of the Motatapu Track and its physically challenging terrain, it is only suitable for experienced trampers.
