This riding season, park yourself and your trusty two-wheeled steed at one of Wānaka’s many bike-friendly accommodations.
Wānaka Homestead: The Wānaka Homestead has a lock-up room for bikes and a hose on hand to clean hard-working bikes after a day on the tracks! And with five bed & breakfast king or twin rooms (sleeping up to ten people), you can bring your entire crew to ride. The Homestead also has family-friendly self-catering cottages; the two bedroom Ruby Cottage which sleeps four, and the three bedroom Lismore Cottage which sleeps seven. You can also hire shiny new bikes and helmets on site for $25 for half a day and $40 for full day. And don’t forget, the Homestead is just a ten-minute drive to Bike Glendhu and just a hop, skip and a jump away from the lakefront trails and #thatwānakatree.
Mountain View Backpackers: The team at Mountain View Backpackers is made up of like-minded riders from all over New Zealand who are primed and ready with tips for visiting bike enthusiasts, like local knowledge of bike parks, single track trails, enduro, cross-country and easy riding areas.
On-site there are bike cleaning facilities with high pressure hoses and brushes, secure under cover storage, a dedicated fix-it area with tools and stands and bike servicing and maintenance pick up.
The Backpackers is close to riding areas like Lizzy Woods, Sticky Forest and the lakeside trails. It’s also close to town, food, pubs and local bike shops.
Alpine Motel Wānaka & Apartments: Choose to lock your bike on-site, on your vehicle or in your room. The motel has camera surveillance and 24hr lighting for extra security.
Archway Motel: The Archway has bike storage on-site and washing stations. They are also happy to provide free use of the on-site hot tubs to riders who need to rest their achy bones after a big day of slogging.
Fairway Motel & Apartments: Fairway Motel and has secure storage for bicycles and a boat/car wash bay that can serve as a bike wash station to rinse the mud off after a day of riding!
Bella Vista Motel: Bella Vista is definitely bike-friendly. They offer a secure lock-up for bicycles in the old Wānaka jail cell! It doesn’t get much more secure than that! They also have a bike-wash station on-site.
Bella Vista also partners with all the major bike rental shops to offer deals. Being centrally located in Wānaka means that visitors can arrive without a vehicle and simply walk across the road, hire a bike and be on their way! How eco-friendly!
Wānaka View Motel: At Wānaka View Motel, a storage shed is provided for guests to stash their bikes and there’s easy access to the main bike tracks from the motel. They’re even able to supply guests with bikes!
Manuka Crescent Motel: Guests at the motel can stow their bikes in the confines of the building in either the large yard area or the ski dry room. Many studios also have their own terrace, should guests choose to lock their bikes there.
Edgewater Wānaka: With a lakefront location, Edgewater has direct access to the cycling trail. They also offer on-site bike rentals and helmets for only $35pp per day. In terms of bike storage, guests can request a ground floor room, with ranch-slider doors, providing direct access to the lawn and trails. There’s also an option to store bikes in their ski drying rooms for overnight safety. Guests to the resort can park their bikes at the rack on the terrace.
Edgewater also has an on-site helipad, offering access to the high alpine for hard-out riders. And at the end of the day, indulge in an Elements massage for your weary bones and an after-ride treat at the Wineglass café.
Glendhu Bay Motor Camp: Glendhu Bay Motor Camp is the closest accommodation to Bike Glendhu (only 300 metre from the end of the camp!). They are currently set up with a bike wash and will have a secure bike stand and e-bike charging station this summer.
All Bike Glendhu season pass holders get 10% off campsites (both powered and non-powered) throughout the season (excluding December 24th – February 7th) and all campers are entitled to 10% off day and season passes at Bike Glendhu (excluding December 24th – February 7th). Be sure to keep your eye out, because the camp and Bike Glendhu work together often to offer promotions during ‘big bike weekends’.
For those bikers with little shredders, the camp has 4km of camp roads that provide a safe haven for kids, plus the Millennium Track just off the site. With nine cabins, a twenty bed lodge, a fourteen bed house and 411 campsites, Glendhu Bay is the perfect accommodation option for bike groups of all sizes.
Wānaka TOP 10 Holiday Park: The Holiday Park is a Cycle Hub member park with the Holiday Park Association, which means that they are committed to ensuring bike holidays are made easier by providing advice and maps for riders, secured under cover cycle storage, a bike cleaning area, contacts for local bike mechanics and bike hire options (including child seats and a tag-a-long bike). With prior arrangement, the park can also plan pick up and drop-off services.
The Camp Hawea: The Camp is an incredible biking accommodation with both camping and glamping options, open spaces, bikes to hire and proximity to the vast, beautiful trails of Lake Hawea. Plus, they’re just down the road from the newest Bike Wānaka’s riding area on Domain Road, complete with a flow trail, skills area and pump track!
